Cancer – Prevent the Risks!!

Wellness

Cancer is spreading like an epidemic in today’s world!

Even though studies and research are being carried out for last 30 years, we still couldn’t get hold of it. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death as per World Health Organisations statistics. According to the studies, the more a nation is developed, higher is the chances of dying of cancer. Not only that, cancer in young generation is increasing at a fast pace.

We know the seriousness of cancer and it is definitely scary. There’s nothing in our daily life that cancer doesn’t touch. There’s no magic pill, food or herb that will prevent us from cancer. Each one of us is taking necessary precautions to prevent the risk of cancer. It can be minimizing your skin from exposure or scrubbing fruits or veggies to wash away pesticides.

However, there are still some bad habits that we can lose to prevent the risk of cancer:

  1. Carrying the cell phone in inners:

cancer

Putting your cell phones in the middle of your chest or in your bra may be a random habit but the repercussions of the same are very serious. There have been numerous cases where the doctors found cancerous tumors in the center of the breast. Factors like the young age of the women, the location where the cell phone is kept, tumors and lack of markers trigger breast cancer among women. Even men who carry cell phones in their breast pockets are at risk.

2. Alcohol:

It has been said many times that drinking alcohol in moderate quantities is good for cardiovascular health. However, studies reveal that it can increase your cancer risk. Alcohol can increase body fat, lead to obesity and eventually causing cancer. Drinking alcohol can lead to the production of stomach acids causing damage to the gastrointestinal tract. Alcohol can increase the risk for colorectal, breast, oesophageal, mouth, pharynx, larynx and liver cancer.

3. Smoking:

cancer

There is not a single person who is not aware of the damage smoking does. It is not only a huge cancer risk but destroys your health. It can harm almost every organ and system in the body. Cigarettes have a harmful substance like Nicotine and Carbon monoxide that blocks the passage of oxygen in the blood. It also causes respiratory failure, bronchitis, and lung cancer. To add some more years to your life, one should quit smoking.

4. Eating Grilled Meat:

Barbeque parties are great ways to have a family get together. However, you should know that the grilling can cause health risks. When meat, fish or poultry are cooked under high heat by grilling, barbequing, boiling or pan-frying, it gives out chemical reactions.  These carcinogenic compounds can alter the eater’s DNA. One should cut back on grilled meat and eat it moderately.

5. Lack of Physical Activity:

It is very important to have a certain kind of physical activity in your daily lifestyle. The meals we consume have fat loaded to give us energy. However, when we stay inactive, this fat gets metabolized and used up leading to problems like diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, gastric cancer etc. Get up from your couch and walk for 30 minutes daily, you’d see an amazing difference in your body.

6. Stress:

cancer

There is no direct link between cancer and stress; however, stress is the main factor behind many diseases. Stress cannot be shunned from our life totally but we can work towards decreasing or avoiding it. Chronic stress can impact the functions of our body. Though the word ‘cancer’ is stressful itself, we must work to improve the quality of our life. Sleeping enough, practicing yoga or medication and seeking professional help are some of the ways to prevent stress.

7. Processed Meats:

Processed meat like hot dogs, bacon, sausage or deli meats that are treated in order to be kept preserved or flavored can cause cancer. Such meats are salted, cured, fermented and smoked for preservation. It has been even proved by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that processed meat causes cancer. There is a risk of bowel cancer, colorectal, pancreatic and prostate cancer among many others.

8. Exposure to UV rays:

cancer

Almost every type of skin cancer is the result of exposure to the UV rays in sunlight. Activities like spending time in the sun, going to the beach, sunbathing, water sports or previous damage to the skin can cause skin cancer. Even indirect and artificial exposure to UV rays like indoor tanning, welding or metal work and phototherapy can increase the risk of skin cancer.

There are many other activities or habits that can cause cancer. They are:

  • A diet that includes a high amount of salt or pickled food can cause nasopharyngeal cancer.
  • Skipping morning breakfast can cause gallbladder cancer and affect your bodily function as well. After a long night gap, the stomach needs food to carry out the daily activities.
  • When you sleep late, there is interference in the working of cells in the body. A substance called melatonin is produced at night, it has the ability to prevent and destroy cancer cells in the body. Hence, one should get enough sleep.
  • The chemicals from the air fresheners have the potential to damage the olfactory receptors in our nostrils. It can leave the nostril incapable of recognizing other smell and deteriorates the air quality too.
  • Drinking or bathing in polluted, chlorinated or fluoridated water can cause skin cancer among many others.
